April 29, 2020

Dear Elk Grove Unified Parents, Educational Rights Holders, and Students:

We would like to share with you that your student may be eligible to take community college courses and earn college credit as an EGUSD student before they graduate.  Please note the following reasons why your student may wish to take courses at the community college level, your student wishes to:

  1. Save money in college by taking transferable/eligible college courses (advanced education tuition is free.  However, students are financially responsible for

a.     Books (speak with your counselor about low or no cost options)

b.     Student Rep fees-$1.00 at Los Rios Campuses

c.     Universal Transit Pass (UTP)-$11.00 at Los Rios Campuses. The UTP is available for use on Regional Transit (RT) services including buses and light rail.  All students are charged the UTP fee regardless of use.

  1. Take classes that the high school doesn’t offer
  2. Understand the expectations of college-level courses earlier
  3. Test drive a career or interests before choosing a college major
  4. Begin or obtain a certification (ex: Aeronautics, Health InformationTechnology,  Radio Production, etc.)
  5. Advance in a subject matter
  6. Learn how to read, write, and speak in a native or new language
  7. Take a Human Career Development course to learn how to increase job skills

In addition, ACT research found that students entering college with college credit are generally more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree faster and are as likely to earn a B or higher in subsequent courses taken in college.

Who is eligible for the advanced education program:

  1. Students that complete the 10th grade OR are 16 years old by the first day of college instruction
  2. Students who have at least a 2.7 unweighted, cumulative high school GPA
  3. Students wishing to take courses that  are not remedial (1-99 Classes)

Additional thoughts:

  • Make sure the classes you’re taking can be transferred to the college you want to attend after you graduate high school.
  • Remember that these classes are on your permanent record, so make sure you are prepared to dedicate adequate time to studying and learning the material. If you’re already overwhelmed with other obligations (sports, clubs, work, etc.), it might not be a good time to pursue college classes.

This message is for seniors who are planning to attend CRC in the summer/fall 2020.  Before school closed suddenly we were intending to have a CRC workshop this week for those of you who had completed your CRC application.  The workshop was to be run by our CRC Outreach Specialist in order to complete the next steps in the application process, choose your classes, etc...  Since this workshop did not occur we are awaiting for detailed direction from CRC so that we can inform you how they intend to complete this process for all of you so that you will be ready to go in the summer or fall.  They have indicated to us that more information will be coming the week of March 30th.  As soon as we get the information we will provide it to you so please check your synergy email and pghsnews regularly.

If you still need to apply to CRC or another Los Rios college please do so by going to californiacolleges.edu and log in: User Name:  student ID@egusd.net and Password:  your google or synergy pw should work.  Go to "colleges" and then to the right "application for community college".  You can also go directly to losrios.edu to apply if the above does not work.  Any seniors who are planning to attend a Los Rios college other than CRC please check with that college directly for your next steps.

Please take care and be safe,

Mrs. Aguero  & Mrs. Melady
